Two giant Burger King takeaway cups had an unexpected purpose at the Dublin Marathon: runners could climb into them for a cold plunge. The oversized drink-cup installations turned a familiar piece of fast-food packaging into a post-race recovery experience.

Created with BBH Dublin for the October 25, 2026 marathon, the activation formed part of “A Whopper of a Finish.” Burger King partnered with Saunos Dublin to offer runners and a guest a complimentary 45-minute sauna and cold plunge session, alongside a free Whopper offer for finishers at participating restaurants.

In this article: Giant-cup ice baths, food-themed encouragement signs, and what physical brand design adds to a race-day campaign.

When a drinks cup becomes a cold plunge

The central idea was a scale change. Instead of placing a Burger King logo beside an ordinary ice bath, the campaign remade the bath itself as an enormous branded takeaway cup. That made the installation immediately recognizable as part of the fast-food chain’s visual world while giving runners something they could actually use.

The cups sat beneath the campaign line “A Whopper of a Finish.” Together, the packaging-inspired tubs and the recovery setting created a visual joke built around refreshment after a long run. They also provided a distinct photographable moment without relying on a conventional product display.

The food joke followed runners along the route

The installation was the endpoint of a broader campaign, not its only appearance. Outdoor and digital out-of-home placements positioned along the marathon route borrowed the language of spectator encouragement and redirected it toward Burger King’s menu.

One message, “Eyes on the fries,” treated the promised meal as motivation for reaching the finish line. The creative used the context of a race rather than a generic restaurant promotion, connecting the brand to a moment participants and supporters were already experiencing.

From encouragement to a post-race reward

Outdoor and social activity began on October 19, ahead of the October 25 race. The cold-plunge and sauna experience brought the campaign into the recovery period, while the participating-restaurant Whopper offer gave runners a separate food reward after finishing.

This continues the “Whopper of a Finish” idea used around the London Marathon earlier in 2026, but Dublin added a physical activation built from the chain’s own drinks packaging. The sequence linked encouragement on the course, an unusual recovery experience and a familiar menu item without making each touchpoint look identical.

BBH Dublin executive creative director Marcos Gemal described the approach as giving familiar marathon support signs a Burger King twist. Neither the brand nor the agency disclosed redemption, participation or sales results in the campaign coverage reviewed.

What marketers can learn from Burger King’s giant cups

The most transferable idea is to make a brand asset perform a real function. Burger King did not simply enlarge a logo for visibility. It enlarged a recognizable drink cup until that shape could contain the recovery experience itself. The design therefore carried both the brand identity and the activity.

The route-side messages and post-race meal offer reinforced the same occasion from different angles. The campaign illustrates how physical design can connect an audience’s existing ritual to a product promise, although the available coverage does not establish whether the activation increased visits or purchases.
